As the world continues to debate and question his astonishing 100m freestyle world record, China’s Pan Zhanle has backed it up with another truly jaw-dropping swim — producing the fastest relay leg in history to help China to a strong result in the pool amid the doping controversy engulfing the nation.
Pan celebrated his 20th birthday on Sunday with a storming final leg to hand China gold in the men’s Olympic 4x100m medley relay.
“It’s magic for me,” said Pan, who smashed the 100m freestyle world record on his way to the title this week.

unfathomable：难以理解的；高深莫测的
unfathomable是一个GRE词汇，英文释义为too strange or difficult to be understood，在这里用来形容潘展乐的竞技水平高深到难以理解，不断给人带来新的冲击。
在外刊中，unfathomable其实很常见，比如《经济学人》一篇关于马斯克巨额薪酬方案的文章中，就用到了这个词：
In January the deal was struck down by a judge in Delaware who called the pay package an “unfathomablesum”.
今年1月，该协议被特拉华州的一名法官否决，他称这笔薪酬是“难以估量的金额”。

其实这个词组还有一个大家更熟悉的形式，叫做mind-blowing【引起幻觉的；令人震惊的】，字面意思可以理解为：某人的思想受到了打击，也就是某人的思想受到了震撼。
来看一个动画Rick and Morty《瑞克和莫蒂》中的例子：

这部动画已经更新到了第七季，每一季豆瓣评分都是9分以上，推荐大家去看。脑洞超大，信息量也很大，编剧完全放飞，非常精彩。
fuse：导火线；导火索
句子中的light作动词，表示“点燃；点火”，所以lights fuse with 'unfair' claims直译过来是“以‘不公平’为由点燃导火索”，使用一个具体的动作，将对手们不服气的情绪刻画得更加形象。
另外，fuse作词根时相当于单词pour，表示“流动”。比如infuse【将（液体、思想、品质等）逐渐引入或注入】，effuse【流出，涌出】，confuse【混淆、使困惑】等等。

question在这里为动词，英文释义为to have or express doubts or suspicions about sth，对某事表达怀疑。大家平时接触question的名词用法比较多，看到动词用法也要及时反应过来。

back sth. up：证明，证实
back sth. up是一个多义词组，在文中的含义是“用行动来证明”。除此之外，还可以表示“备份”、“支持”、“恢复”、“退后”等意思。

jaw-dropping：令人震惊的
跟上面讲到的mind-blowing用法类似，jaw是“下巴”的意思，所以jaw-dropping的字面含义是“惊掉下巴的”，因此可以引申为“令人吃惊的”。

breathtaking：令人窒息的，令人惊叹的；形容给人带来的强烈感受，仿佛让人喘不过气来。

leg：一段赛程
这里是leg的一个熟词僻义的用法，英文释义为one part of a journey or race，旅程或比赛的一部分，可以理解为接力比赛中的一棒。
